Schynige Platte, Top of Swiss Tradition

Near Interlaken at the small town of Wilderswil, this cog railway brings you to the Schynige Platte. A true nature paradise with great hiking possibilities, the alpine flower garden and of course the famous panorama with Eiger, Moench and Jungfrau.

Schynige Platte, where tradition is written all over the place

Already the trains are traditional. The railway was built in 1893. In 1914 electrification of the line was carried out and many of the original locomotives are still in operation. Some of the passenger cars date back to 1893! As the train winds up the 800 mm narrow gauge cog rail, the panorama evolves. First you will have views to the north over Interlaken and Lake Brienz. later, you will have spectacular views into the glacier carved valley of Lauterbrunnen. Finally you will see the Eiger, Moench and Jungfrau appear. Then following a final turn to the left, the summit station is reached.

During the summer alphorn blowers will play. These instruments produce “earthly tones” and have a calming effect. Enjoy the sound and feel free to ask questions afterwards.

Highlight

Experience and enjoy the botanical alpine garden with stunning views of the Eiger, Moench and Jungfrau. This garden was founded back in 1927.

A unique attraction displaying over 700 species of plants native to the Swiss Alps, growing in their natural communities. A site of scientific research and nature conservation at 1,967 m, which also gives visitors a closer look at the beauty, wealth and secrets of alpine flora.

The hotel and restaurant has a huge terrace. Fine traditional food is offered.

Good to know

The Schynige Platte is a true hikers paradise. There is a short one hour round tour with an ascent of one of the smaller peaks. A great introduction into alpine hiking: Be sure to wear sturdy boots.

Traditional rooms for overnight makes you feel travelling back in time.
