The classic view of Lugano from Monte Bre

It is what one could call the “Matterhorn effect”. What is meant here? Well, from the summit of the famous Matterhorn, you see all mountains, but not the Matterhorn itself obviously. Similarly here, the most spectacular view of Lugano and the “Sugarloaf of Switzerland” is to be seen from Monte Bre. Therefore, this is a not to be missed excursion on a clear day. The funicular starts at the north end of the city and in two sections it reaches the summit.

Highlight

Excellent observation point towards Lake Lugano and the Alps.

A stone’s throw away from where the cable car reaches the summit at 933 m. Above all, you can admire the magnificent alpine foothills on a natural sunlit terrace above Lake Lugano, a view dominated by the whole of the gulf of Lugano. The view of this breathtaking landscape stretches as far as the imposing sight of Monte Rosa and the Bernese and Valais Alps.

Eating and drinking

The Osteria della Funicolare is located at the exit from the summit station. This is a welcoming traditional pub offering the chance to sample the region’s traditional dishes in the open air with a stunning view of the gulf of Lugano.

Monte Bre is a strategic starting point from which you can set off on magnificent hiking routes through the heart of nature leading away from the summit.

The suggested routes offer a variety of views and points of interest, types of layout, difficulties and lengths as well. Therefore they are suitable for any level of fitness and a wide variety of tastes.
