Zermatt Rothorn – where you have the classic Matterhorn view and see many more peaks
The view from the Zermatt Rothorn (3,103 m) showcases the highest peaks of the Valais Alps. In summer, the Rothorn is the popular starting point for a variety of demanding hikes; in winter, the gateway to beautiful sunny and sometimes steep ski-slopes. When you ride up to the Rothorn, you will use three totally different transportation systems, a funicular through a tunnel, a gondola and a cable car ride. You can explore the most beautiful lakes from here.
The view from Zermatt is well known, but from the summit of the Zermatt Rothorn, you will see the mountain from more or less the same angle, but you get to see the whole panorama and see that it is just one of many mountains in the area. Many of them are even higher and look completely different.
We recommend to break down the return trip in three parts. After having enjoyed the panorama at the summit, descend to the Blauherd station. There you can opt for a 2 hour hike towards several lakes that mirror the Matterhorn. If less time available, a 20 minute hike to the Stellisee lake already shows you one of these lakes.
At the Sunnegga station, the Leissee lake is another possibility. You can also just relax and walk around the lake.
Why not opting for a sunrise ride up and breakfast at the summit restaurant? This is a spectacular way to start your day in Zermatt and you can get the most out of your day because the early start! Try to find out which mountain gets the first sunbeams…
The fore mentioned summit restaurant is one of the many restaurants in the area. At Sunnegga, a great terrace with, what else, view of the Matterhorn is a perfect place to have a lunch or a small snack.
Because the ride up to the Rothorn takes only 30 minutes, this excursion is a perfect addition to the other ones. Especially when you start early, you can easily “do 2 mountains in one day” without having to rush.
Included is some time at the restaurant for drinks or a meal. With the hike, add another 2 hours.
End March to mid October / beginning Dezember to mid April
