The Stanserhorn, where tradition and innovation meet

Less famous than the Rigi and Pilatus, the Stanserhorn is a small jewel in the crown of mountains around Lake Lucerne. This 1,897 metre high mountain rises on the south shore of Lake Lucerne.

The ride up to Stanserhorn is also a journey through local history. One witness is the old-time funicular from Stans to Kaelti. When it opened in 1893, it broke the world record for the longest funicular. Indeed, pioneers have enjoyed an affinity with Stanserhorn for some 120 years. And while historical gems like the old-time funicular will remain at Stanserhorn, the new CabriO will bring to the mountain a breath of fresh air.

World’s first CabriO cable car on the Stanserhorn

A new cable car system lets guests enjoy fresh air and great views around Mt. Stanserhorn. The double-decker cable car has an open upper deck.

Riding to the top of Mt. Stanserhorn with the wind in your hair, the blue sky above you and a fantastic 360° panorama: that was the concept of the new cable car to replace the one from Kaelti to Stanserhorn. A crazy idea? Maybe, but today we can see that it was a thoroughly viable one. The so-called “CabriO” cable car is the world’s first cable car with a roofless upper deck. The comfortable double-decker is the very latest in cable car technology. The lower level (with windows going almost from wall-to-wall) has space for 60 people. From there, an elegant staircase leads up to the sun deck, which offers room for about 30 people. The guests can enjoy 360° panoramic views as well as the fresh mountain air. The car moves on two side-mounted support cables.

Highlight

Since June 2008 the Stanserhorn rangers are on duty. Every day one of the 2 ranger ladies or 14 ranger gentlemen are on duty on Mt. Stanserhorn from 10-16 h and are available to guide you from the restaurant to the summit and back. They love to point out where the eagles fly, the flowers are blooming, or tell you detailed stories. The rangers can also be booked ahead of time for a guided tour with a group. This is free of charge. In November 2008, the Stanserhorn rangers won the Swiss Tourism Award called Milestone in the category ‘Outstanding projects’.

Eating and drinking

In 2001 the first revolving restaurant in central Switzerland opened on Mt. Stanserhorn – the Rondorama. Since Mt. Stanserhorn is known as the five-star mountain, it was built on a star-shaped ground plan. It seats up to 200 people. Out of those, 80 people enjoy the view from the revolving platform. The panorama of the Alps revolves in 43 minutes around you. The construction of steel and wood allows a splendid view of the Alps.

Good to know

Young and old enjoy watching the chirpy animals. On your next visit, go visit the enclosure and let the marmots delight you. You can find them on the way up to the summit at the launch site for delta flyers.
